In a word ... Technology.

Our on-line backup service uses the time-tested software from one of the
industry leaders in backup software ...
NovaStor.
Most backup software will backup all files the first time and subsequently only
backup the file that have changed on the next backup. This works great for
traditional backups to tape or disk but what happens if the file that you are
backing up is 1 GigaByte or larger?
A typical DSL Internet Connection ( 384 kbits per second / outgoing ) and on a
good day can backup 1 GigaByte in 6 hours. This is assuming that the
Internet connection is not being used.
Lots of files are over 1 Gigabyte in size these days. A typical Outlook email
file (pst file) can easily exceed 2 GigaBytes and therefore can't be
effectively backed up with most on-line backup software.
Database files are also routinely in the multiple GigaByte range. An Exchange
Server email store for example can now reach 75 GigaBytes and typically are in
the tens of GigaBytes range. These files cannot be backed up on-line at all
with most software.
FastBITtm Technology
Instead of backing up the entire file when it changes NovaNet-Web by
NovaStor only backs up the pieces of the file that
have changed. Utilizing a complex algorithm and special memory management,
FastBITtm Technology
is capable of comparing files and extracting the bits of binary data that
represent only the specific changes to those files.
Simply put, If only 1 kilobyte of data has actually changed in the file, then
only a 1-kilobyte patch is extracted for backup thus eliminating the overhead
imposed by block technology methodology.
The benefits to the user are huge.
-
Files that would otherwise be impossible to backup on-line can now be backed
up.
-
On-line backup providers charge by bandwidth and space consumed ...
-
A large set of small files can be backed up much faster and with significantly
less bandwidth with FastBITtm Technology.
-
The total size of all backups is the greatly reduced. This is significant
because most on-line backup providers allow you to store multiple versions of
files. A five version history of a 10 MegaByte file for example will occupy 50
MegaBytes of space on their servers. With FastBITtm
Technology these same five versions could easily occupy
less than 11 MegaBytes of space.
Caution!! That last
point was a huge 'gotcha' from
most on-line backup providers. Sure they offer a version history but as
soon as you try to use it you are auto-billed for three times more than you
thought you were going to pay. Ouch!
