Free Lightweight Replacement to the Adobe PDF Reader (A.K.A. The
Adobe Hog)
The current version of Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader is a real pain. It tries to
take over your computer and your life. It is slow to open files and often will
stop working altogether until you reboot.
PDF files have become a de facto standard on the web so we can hardly do without
a PDF reader. However, you don’t need all of the whistles and bells provided by
the current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. For example, you don’t need its
auto-update feature (that’s next to impossible to turn off) or the document
encryption feature (only people in your company can read your documents).
Here are two easy solutions. But first just go to Add/Remove Programs and
uninstall Adobe Acrobat Reader then …
-
Install Foxit Reader 2.0 from
www.foxitsoftware.com
Foxit Reader 2.0 is a free PDF document viewer and printer. Foxit
Reader is:
-
Incredibly small : The download size of Foxit Reader is only
1.5 MB which is a fraction of Acrobat Reader's 28 MB size.
-
Breezing-fast : When you run Foxit Reader, it launches
instantly without any delay. You are not forced to view an annoying splash
window displaying company logo, author names, etc.
-
High security and privacy : Foxit Reader highly respects the
security and privacy of users and will never connect to Internet without users'
permission. While other PDF Reader often silently connects to the Internet in
the background. Foxit PDF Reader does not contain any spyware or adware. Foxit
Software also has reasonably priced tools for editing PDF documents.
-
Install an old version of Acrobat Reader
. You probably don’t need all the new fancy features.
-
Go to www.Adobe.com , click
on the ‘Get Adobe Reader’ button then look closely and you will see a ‘Choose a
different version’ link. Click this and then select ‘Acrobat Reader 5.0.5’
-
Note that Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 is only 10MB and Acrobat Reader 7.0.8 is 28MB.
Those 18 additional MB are all the things you DON’T NEED.
